The word ephemera is derived from the sixteenth century Greek word ephmera meaning a printed or hand written paper not meant to be retained for a long period of time.

She was the daughter of Grand Duke Kirill Vladimirovich and Grand Duchess Victoria Feodorovna and was born in Coburg. Her parents marriage had not been approved of by Tsar Nicholas II as she was the former wife of the Tsarina's brother and lived in exile prior to World War I.

Following the revolution the family moved to Finland and later Germany. She was born a princess, but upon her father's declaration in 1924 to be the Guardian of the Throne and then Emperor, elevated her and her sister to Grand Duchess.
