Fine and monumental antique pair of imperial Russian albumen photographs, entitled in Russian,'Moscow during the Holy Coronation of His Imperial Highness'. Mounted onto stiff card it formed part of series of photographs detailing the Coronation of Tsar Alexander III of Russia in Moscow in 1883. This particular photo by the celebrated nineteenth century Russian photographer Ivan Mechkovsky is of the procession of Tsar Alexander's cortege into the Kremlin Gate past St Basil's Cathedral on 27th May 1883. Reservationist societies monitored the state of the church and called for a proper restoration throughout the 1880s and 1890s. But it was regularly delayed for lack of funds. The church did not have a congregation of its own and could only rely on donations raised through public campaigning.
