Antique Imperial Russia Russian Sterling 84 Cheroot Case Box Niello Cigars 1884 Lovely! The case has a rounded rectangular shaped form.The surface is embellished with fine and impressive niello enamel fret band ornamentation segmented with concave silver gilt borders; this ornamentation continues across the rounded sides to the opposing cover. The anterior surface of the case incorporates a panel depicting the front of a Russian building. I believe it is the Kremlin.
The posterior cover of the case bears a plain rectangular vacant cartouche to the centre, encompassed with a continuation of fret band decoration. This exceptional case secures with a push fit catch and opens to reveal the original gilding. The hallmarks to the interior of this antique case include.Assay mark : Vasily Aleksandrovich Petrov (the mark is hard to read). Silver quality/purity mark: 84 (84 zolotnik). City Mark: St George slaying the dragon. Moscow, Russia SIlversmith: Ivan Evstfbev Fedotov. (best as I can decipher, I believe this is correct). The silver is nice and heavy, exceptional quality and in great condition. We have not polished the case, leaving the patina as is. The niello enamel is in wonderful condition. The original gilded interior has some natural wear and blemishes, in keeping with age. The Russian hallmarks are in the interior of the box. There are also hallmarks on the inside rim. 3.5" W x 1.75" H (including the clasp) x 5.8 deep.
