We are delighted to offer this Snuff/Tobacco Jar by the well renown Imperial Court Supplier Pavel Ovchinnikov who specialised in cloisonne enamel silverware. This piece is constructed from high grade 88 Zolotnik Silver and is decorated in Russian Cloisonne enamelling on the lid and the circular sides of the jar. The exterior is embellished with decorative circular, floral and geometric motifs and unlike typical Russian cloisonne colours (blue, red, green), the foreground features an array of unique tones ranging from blue, cream, red and green which is further contrasted with a stippled silver-gilt background with a patina-like finish.

Pavel Ovchinnikov being one of the most celebrated silversmiths with his works being displayed in numerous museums across the globe, this tobacco jar undoubtedly reflects such status and prestige. From the sublime aesthetic proportions of the top lid with an 8 point star to the fine and meticulous cloisonné detailing on the base of the jar - the effort, mastery and perfectionistic standards of Ovchinnikov's work is greatly apparent in this piece. Upon opening the lid, the bright gilt interior shines magnificently adding another dimension of accenting and appearance to this jar.

The jar weighing a solid 280g presents a reassuring quality feel upon holding and the hinge and closure of the lid function perfectly in original condition with no repairs. The base is fully hallmarked with Pavel Ovchinnikov's maker's mark and the 88 Kokoshnik mark with the delta symbol symbolising the town mark of Moscow. With this item, we were able to narrow down the date to c.

1870 due to the combination of the 88 mark and the imperial warrant that was granted to Ovchinnikov in 1865 when he was appointed official court supplier of Imperial Russia (Tsar). Needless to say, this piece of Ovchinnikov's work is an exemplary antique piece of Russian silver craftsmanship with unparalleled aesthetics and precision in cloisonne enamelling. A truly unique object of vertu, differentiating itself from typical kovshs and spoons - a highly recommended piece for keen collectors of Russian/Ovchinnikov/Cloisonne with only the highest standards in rarity, quality and condition.
